Final UT2004 environment (New version)
A new version was made for the final UT2004 environment. A new lab has been add behind the wall and the whole architecture has been connect to the wall with the ramps. There's a stage with two ramps inside the lab which the colourful lighting below express the quote "colour affects how we feel" and the bright lighting above the stage represents Florence Nightingale which she came to be known as "The Lady with the Lamp". Furthermore, more ramps are added to reinforce the relationship between the client Stephen Hawking and the architecture regarding on his disability.Final UT2004 environment
The idea of the two cubes with black and white ramp (stairs) comes from the word "dice" from the quote. The cube with gray colour was designed with the idea from Stephen Hawking and the one with light colour was designed for Florence Nightingale. These two cubes are brought together by the two ramp (stairs) with a meeting place (the upper level). Besides, the little cubes and the large cube elements from the centre column are also representing "throwing the dice". The long ramp (stairs) and the big cube (at the highest point of the whole building which looks like the sun) are representing the power of "god". The brightness provides a feeling of heaven for the upper level (see bottom left image) and underground for the lower level (see top right image), which is also related to the word "god".
From the dark colour cube, different colours of lighting was used, again, in order to fit the idea of "colour affects how we feel". Besides, the main structure of the cube was packed with solid prisms which were pushed out from Hawkings cube which represents his theory on black hole. Long stripe shapes of holes are used to obtain sunlight from the ceiling. On the other hand, holes , ramp, uplifted level and dark colour were chosen in order to express Stephen Hawking's disability. However, the penetrating of sunlights through the holes and different colour of lights represents the success of Stephen Hawking.
For the light colour cube, the floor was designed with 36 transparent squares which is related to the word "the dice where they cannot be seen". In addition, this cube was design with holes which is the opposite of Hawking's cube, as lights can penetrated through these holes (window) to obtain a bright environment which fits the clinet Florence Nightingale who's always full of hope. Also, the cross window frames are representing the sign of "god" and "red cross" which was related to Florence Nightingale's job, nurse.
The lower level was designed as a combined space for both clients, Nightingale and Hawking, which bright space represent nightingale and dark for Hawking. There are glasses on the centre column of the lower level which intersecting polygons can be seen inside and lighting are emitting from the centre as well. Different textures from light to dark are used on the ascending stage to express the idea of "materials that have a physical effect on us". Lights are also emitting through the gaps of the stages and glass blocks on the ceiling. In addition, the glass blocks (see bottom right image) is also related to the phrase "dice that cannot be seen".
The upper and lower level are connected through a circular staircase. The walls at the lower level were cut with stripe shapes of holes in order to gain sunlight from outside. Dark lightings and rock walls were used to obtain the feeling of underground which makes a contrast with the upper level. Furthermore, a curved shape stair was created to connect both the upper level and lower level. A light colour of texture was used to contrast with the dark texture of the lower level.References considered
